Water Pollution

   Posted by: Sarabjeet   in Health

About 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water. Water is undoubtedly the most precious natural resource that exists on our planet. Water plays an important role in everybody’s life to grow and prosper.

Water pollution occurs when a body of water is affected due to the addition of large amounts of dirty material to the water. When water become unfit for intended use, water is considered polluted.

We can also say that when toxic substances enter lakes, streams, rivers, oceans, and other water bodies, they get dissolved or lie as residue in water. This results in the pollution of water. This, in turn, proves very harmful to aquatic organisms as it affects the respiration ability of fish and other invertebrates that reside in water.

Pollution is also caused when silt and other suspended solids, such as soil, wash away from the fields, construction and logging sites, urban areas, and eroded river banks when it rains. Today, many people dump their garbage into streams, lakes, rivers, and seas. By doing this, they are finally making water bodies the permanent place of cans, bottles, plastics, and other household products.

There are various sources of water pollution. But the major sources of water pollution can be classified as municipal, industrial, and agricultural.
Municipal water pollution consists of waste water from homes and commercial establishments. Industrial water pollution depends on their collective characteristics, such as biochemical oxygen demand and the amount of suspended solids.

Polluted water is unsuitable for drinking, recreation, agriculture, and industry. It is eliminating the beauty of lakes and rivers. More seriously, contaminated water destroys aquatic life and reduces its reproductive ability. Eventually, it is a hazard to human health.

To reduce the problem of water pollution, the government alone cannot do anything. It is ultimately up to us, to solve the entire problem of polluted water when it comes to the problems we face with our water. If these measures are not taken and water pollution continues, life on earth will suffer severely.
