Legend says that during Mahabharat era, Babruvaahan who was the grandson of Bhimsen and Hidimba was bestowed by Kaamaksha Devi to be undefeatable and capable of destroying the whole world in a single assault, but was subject to be beheaded by Lord Krishna’s Sudarshan Chakra in case of misusing his powers. In the meeting before the battle of Mahabharat, Bhimsen pledged to finish the war in 18 days, Arjun pledged to finish it in 3 days and Babruvaahan said that he will finish the battle in just 2.5 seconds and thus Krishna unleashed his Sudarshan Chakra and beheaded him. Still the head had life and it was hung on a tree from where it saw the entire Mahabharat.
After the war the Paandavaas were moving through a forest with Babruvaahan’s head, where he recollected his previous birth in which he was a ‘NAAG’ (a male snake) and had saved his life from fire by entering into the grass called Kaamru that does not catches fire. The Paandavaas left his head at this place on his request. Hence Babruvaahan is now called Kamrunaag Devta. He is considered most powerful local deity of Himachal Pradesh. Kamrunaag is believed to be the ‘God of Rains’. Much folklore is famous about the powers of this Devta.
For centuries, people have been worshiping Kamrunaag Devta for fulfilling their wishes. The ladies throw their ornaments in the lake as an offering to the Devta when their wishes are fulfilled.
