The coaches of a passenger train fell into a rain-swollen river, killing at least 40 people in southern India.

Around 100 injured passengers had been rescued from the seven coaches after floods washed away the tracks in the town of Veligonda in Andhra Pradeshstate.

They were being flown by helicopters to hospitals in Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh.

Army divers and local volunteers also swam to the coaches and helped pull out the injured .

Many passengers were still trapped in the coaches, at least five of which were lying on their side, partially submerged in water.

The heavy rains also washed away many roads in the area, making it difficult for rescuers and ambulances to reach the accident site.
