Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is recuperating well in post-operative care after the marathon bypass surgery here Saturday. Doctors said Sunday they were “more than happy” with his recovery and he also spoke to his family.
The prime minister underwent five bypass surgeries Saturday at the state-run premier All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

The surgery, held at operation theatre-5, began at 8.45 a.m. Saturday and was “successfully concluded” at 7.33 p.m., after which Manmohan Singh was wheeled into the ICU at 8.55 p.m.

“He will be in the ICU for the next 46-48 hours after which he will be taken off intensive monitoring… The PM is stable. His doctors are more than happy with his recovery,” D.K. Sharma, medical superintendent AIIMS, told IANS.An 11-member team of surgeons, anaesthetists and physicians performed the complicated surgery under the overall guidance of the head of AIIMS Cardio Vascular and Thoracic Centre Sampath Kumar. Ramakant Panda, vice-chairman of the Asian Heart Institute in Mumbai, was the main surgeon.

Manmohan Singh had undergone a bypass surgery earlier in 1990 and an angioplasty in 2004.
